What are Pigmentation Spots?

Benign pigmented spots are coloured spots or patches on the skin caused by increased production of melanin, the dark pigment in the skin (sun spots, age spots, freckles, uneven skin tone). Some lesions are present at birth whilst others develop with exposure to sun or with age. Everybody wants smooth, clear youthful looking skin. Unfortunately sun damage is inevitable.

Uneven skin tone is patchy areas on the skin caused by increased production of melanin, the dark pigment in the skin. These can develop with the use of harsh products, exposure to sun or with age.

Freckles are localized deposits of melanin. Brown, round or oval pigmented areas on the skin, they are often barely visible. Freckles often occur most often in people with fair skin and light or red hair. The tendency to freckle is usually inherited. They become more numerous and darker in the sun, and therefore more noticeable.

If you have benign pigmented spots then the only way to get rid of them is to have laser treatment. This damage is well beneath the top layers of skin and no creams will ever be able to repair the damage.

How does Pigmentation Spot Removal work?

The Intense Pulsed Light system produces a light that eliminates flaws without damaging the surrounding skin. A sapphire crystal waveguide conducts the filtered light to the target chromophores in the tissues causing the unwanted skin lesions to heat up and disintegrate/disappear. Discoloration of the skin and hyper-pigmentation can be irradiated.

How many treatments are needed?

The number of treatments will depend on the type and size of the pigmented lesion but typically 1 to 3 sessions are required at 4-6 week intervals.

How do I prepare for a treatment?

Patients should avoid tanning on the treatment area roughly one month ahead of treatment to avoid excessive light absorption in the skin. Immediately after the treatment the skin is particularly sensitive to UV light and strong sunlight should be avoided for at least 2 weeks. High factor sun lotions can be used.

What is the treatment like?

The procedure is non-invasive and pain free. Many people describe the procedure as a flick of an elastic band.

What skin types can be treated?

All skin types can be treated with the IPL machine except black skin type. For this skin type a natural skin peel maybe recommended for skin rejuvenation. Please enquire for more details.

Why do I need a Test Patch?

This is to check your skin suitability and to ensure there are no adverse reactions to the treatment. A period of 2 - 5 days must be left between this and commencement of treatment.
